Restaurant taxes (menu item tax rates, sales taxes, currency)

In the Taxation section of the admin panel, the restaurant can set different tax rates for menu items or for different services, change the currency or establish the way a restaurant sales tax is applied to the menu prices.

These options are available under Setup -> Payment, taxes & legal -> Taxation:

set restaurant taxes

The system uses some defaults for each country, but the restaurant can set them up accordingly.

For example, if a restaurant is based in the US/Canada, the Sales Tax will be set to "Apply tax on top of my menu prices" by default, but this can be easily changed from the dropdown to "Menu prices already include taxes":

1. Create multiple taxation categories, for example, food and/or drinks:

Then, items can be assigned to a particular category here:

2. Change restaurant currency

The currency should be automatically set according to the country of the restaurant. However, they can also change their currency under Taxation -> Currency.

See below:

There is also an option to set additional service fees from Other -> Advanced settings -> Service fees -> Add fee, like this:

set restaurant service fee

How to remove tax

If the restaurant wishes to remove taxes for all their menu items and services, they should access the Payment, taxes & legal -> Taxation section and set up the tax rates to 0%. Like this:

Convenience fee or surcharge

It is recommended not to overcrowd the final checkout screen with extra fees and surcharges as in this step it might confuse the food clients and drive them away. Therefore, such a feature it neither supported nor planned for development.

There are several alternative ways of including such a fee:

  • increase the delivery fee
  • increase the minimum order value
  • activate the online payments and kindly suggest an online tip value (or charge offline and prompt for a tip on the offline payment moment)
  • increase the prices on the menu (for example on most ordered items) etc.

If it is mandatory that the fee should be included separately, there are some other options:

  • if the convenience fee is a fixed percentage add it on top of the sales tax and change the sales tax description field into “sales tax x% + convenience fee y%”. Like this:

  • if the convenience fee is a fixed value per item or category of items, define in the menu editor a mandatory add-on group called "convenience fee" having one topping already preselected and called "extra-charge on this item" with a specified $ value.
